Choosing The Right Makeup Brushes For The Right Job
By Angie L
What’s your signature tool? Every famous artist has their own tool of craftsmanship, something they are known for. Leonardo da Vinci had his paint brush. William Shakespeare used a pen. You have your brush. You are all masters of each.

Have you ever wondered if you maybe weren’t such a master artist and were using the wrong brush for your makeup? What you may not know is, the right brush can make all the difference in the world when it comes to applying your flawlessly. Just like with any job, choosing the wrong tool will hinder your chances of getting it done right.

Leading beauty experts put together this list of brushes to make sure you are using the right tools for the right application job. They help you understand what brush will go with the right and the correct way to use it.

• Powder - Your powder brush is the largest brush you should have in your extensive collection. This brush is used to set the finishing powder onto your face and help soften the foundation.

o To Use: Swirl the brush lightly into the finishing powder and then tap the brush gently to remove any access powder. Brush the powder lightly over any areas of the face you want to cover.

• Eye-shadow - Eye-shadow brushes are designed to give you the right amount of color to the lid without looking like you just threw it all on in a dark room. An often overlooked, great thing about an eye-shadow brush is that it can easily help to blend more than one eye shadow without leaving behind any lines. Take my opinion and get a few of these. You’ll want one that is a one-inch soft, fluffy brush for applying a sheer color over the entire lid and a small, soft slanted brush for the crease of your lid and brow bone area.

o To Use: Sweep a pale color over the entire lid and then sweep a medium color beginning at the upper lash line and bringing it up

to the crease of the lid.

• Eyeliner - If you think you have a steady hand, an eyeliner brush is great for softening up pencil lines. The brush is wide and flat shaped. Plus it can be used wet or dry.

o To Use: Hold the brush vertically, while carefully following the lash line as closely as possible.

• Eyebrows and Lashes - A spoolie brush looks like a mascara brush but without the mascara. It is designed to control any unruly eyebrow hairs while removing excess mascara. When purchasing a eyebrow brush, be sure it has firm bristles. A soft brush will only slide over the surface, which you don’t want. A firm brush will groom and control the short eyebrow hairs.

o To Use: Brush the eyebrows upward and back toward your ear or swipe across the lashes from base to tip to remove clumps.

• Blush – A blush brush is should NEVER be mistaken with a powder brush. I cannot stress that enough. A blush brush is much smaller with an angled, flat head and its job is for the apple of your cheeks only. This brush provides a smooth even application without any harsh edges for a more natural look.

o To Use: Swirl the brush lightly into the blush. Tap to remove any excess color. Next, smile to find the apples of your cheeks and then sweep the brush across your cheeks in a circular motion up to the hairline.

• Lips - For even coverage across your lips, these brushes are generally the smallest of all the brushes and are designed to line the inside of your lips.

o To Use: Swipe the brush across the lipstick of your choice and fill in lips using the brush.

If you wish to invest in quality brushes, purchase natural bristle rather than synthetic bristles. Sable is a popular favorite at many chains. Make sure the bristles are packed tight and not loose. If you need, you can brush the back of the hand to make sure it doesn't lose too many bristles.
